Dearest DGF Family,
For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Ella! The DGF Music Hall Mascot. I’m delighted to be taking over the blog this month to kick off my new series on Music Hall Highlights.
With a fully-booked reservation calendar, not a day goes by that someone isn’t creating/revising/performing their work in the Music Hall. And we are so proud to be able to provide a space where writers can feel supported, inspired, and safe.
Based on all of the PAWsitive feedback on the last blog about the importance of SPACE, I’ll be checking in every few months with updates from writers in our community about what they’ve been working on in the Music Hall.
Below you’ll find some of my favorite moments from this month. I feel so lucky to support these artists:
Madeline Myers (@madelinesmyers) rehearsed music from not just one but FOUR shows!
“I’m so grateful to be in the Music Hall this week to rehearse songs from my musicals Masterpiece, The Starry Messenger, The Devil’s Apprentice, and a new show about the scientist Rosalind Franklin and her role in the discovery of DNA.”
But rehearsing isn’t the only way to use this space. Madeline will be showcasing her work in a small concert next week!
“I’m so thrilled to be able to host a concert here because it feels so warm and inviting…not like a traditional concert setting—[It’s] like everyone is sitting around the piano in my apartment (if only we could all fit in my apartment)!”
Madeline taps into one of my favorite things about this space- seating can be arranged to best showcase musicals, plays, panels, and more.
For instance, when the New York Theatre Salon came in, their needs were entirely different!
Founders Yue Li and Troy Segala host a monthly social event for professional theatre artists from different nations, cultures and communities.
This week In the Music Hall, and in celebration of Women’s History Month, they invited Felicia King, Nana Dakin, and Lauren Cox for a discussion of working in the theater in our current social climate and what it means to be a multi-talented theatre artist.
What’s more, some of our guests have shows going up this week! Congratulations to Athena Theatre on the opening of I Carry Your Heart, at 59E59 theater. The company has been rehearsing the show in the Music Hall, and we’re thrilled to see the complete production.
No matter what stage of your project (or your career!), you’re in the right space. Past guests have nurtured their work and professional partnerships, resulting in wildly successful professional shows like Hello, Girls or Mary and Max. Who knows what will come out of the Music Hall next?!
So much of theater is about sharing space, even if in different times, and like layers of paint, every rehearsal contributes to the texture and the energy of the Music Hall, creating a signature story that’s all at once unique and universal.
I see you working like dogs on your art, and I would like to personally thank you for bringing your talents to our space.
Until next time,
